MATERIAL SELECTION GUIDE

Choosing interior materials: quality, budget and maintenance

The right material fits its use, lighting, construction details and total cost; it is not necessarily the most expensive product.

Define the location and use

A wet area, bedroom wall and busy floor have different demands. Record moisture, heat, cleaning, contact and impact risks. Specifications should respond to the actual location.

See samples in the space

Compare colour and texture beside retained finishes in daylight and artificial light. Where possible, view a larger sample in its intended orientation. A showroom photograph or screen image is not enough for a final choice.

Compare the full cost

Include preparation, delivery, waste, fittings, installation and maintenance alongside purchase price. Ask what the quotation excludes. Purchase quantities depend on measurements and the installation pattern.

Economical or luxury, use clear criteria

Decide consciously where to save. Retaining existing finishes or simplifying details may help. For luxury selections, check product authenticity, suitability and installation quality. Price alone establishes neither quality nor fitness for use.

Clarify details before ordering

Record the product name and code, dimensions, colour and batch, site requirements, cleaning method and installation responsibilities. Keep the approved sample. Sensitive surfaces and equipment need manufacturer specifications and the relevant specialist advice.

Ask before deciding

Have you seen it in the actual light? Are cleaning and repair practical? Are installation and maintenance costs clear? Is it available for the intended programme? These questions make alternatives easier to compare.
