DESIGN NOTE

Consider light and materials together

A surface’s colour and texture need to be judged in the light of the actual space.

View samples on site

Place samples beside finishes that will remain. A small screen image does not describe a full-sized surface. Where possible, review a larger sample in the orientation in which it will be installed.

More light is not always the answer

Window position, sunlight direction and surface reflections affect the quality of daylight. Consider glare alongside access to natural light. Before choosing a glossy surface, look at its reflections from the places where people will sit or work.

Compare at different times

View samples in daylight and under artificial lighting. A colour can appear different in a showroom and at home. Comparing wall colours, flooring and fabrics together on site provides a more useful basis for a choice.

Consider use as well as appearance

Think about cleaning and everyday use for each surface. Material selection involves more than colour: its location and the needs of the interior matter too. Product specifications and installation requirements need a separate review before construction.

A more recent study of glazing, shades and view clarity

A 2024 study with 50 participants examined how glazing and window shades affect view clarity. For design, this highlights considering light, views and privacy together; laboratory findings are not a universal specification.
